FEATURE WRITING ONLINE

Feature Writing short online course (six weeks)

Freelance feature writing can be a great way to earn money while pursuing your research and story-telling interests. Features usually benefit from the writer’s unique view of the subject matter, rather than requiring a homogenised style of factual news reporting. There are ‘formulas’ for most feature articles, but there is also much leeway for creativity and colour. In this course you will learn the rules of feature writing - and how to break them.

Writing good articles is only one half of the equation. The second half is getting your material published. You will learn how to pitch your story ideas to editors, how to make sure they’re timely and have a fresh and interesting angle, and are targeted to specific publications and audiences.

Examples of feature articles we cover: opinion pieces, personal columns and essays, informative articles, reviews, profiles, travel, anniversary and seasonal articles, and ‘listicles’.
