Sian has a multi-faceted career in the arts, education and media. For the last three decades she has been a writer and broadcaster, working in radio, television, print and online.
She has been a radio presenter on ABC RN, ABC Classic and ABC Melbourne and a regular columnist for The Age/Sydney Morning Herald. Her essays have been published in magazines and literary journals and her short fiction in a range of anthologies.
In 2014 Sian’s critically-acclaimed first book, ‘Shy: a memoir’, was published by Text Publishing. Her second book, ‘Childless: a story of freedom and longing’ was short-listed for The Age 2022 Book of the Year award.
She teaches creative writing at RMIT University, runs her own online writing courses, and mentors individual writers.
Sian is also an event host, public speaker, voice-over artist and musician. She is a graduate of the Opera Studio at the Victorian College of the Arts and was the founding director of the Victorian Trade Union Choir. She currently sings with the La La La Chorale, the Cantabile Chamber Choir, Colla Voce vocal ensemble and the Westgarth Ensemble.
Sian has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), a Graduate Diploma of Opera, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, a Graduate Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing and a Doctorate in Creative Writing.
