SP22OCT2012JM-12_columnSian has a multi-faceted career in the arts, education and media. For the last three decades she has been a writer and broadcaster working in radio, television, print and online.

She has been a presenter on ABC Radio National, ABC Classic FM and ABC Melbourne and a regular contributor  to The Age/Sydney Morning Herald. In  2014 her first book, ‘Shy: a memoir’, was published by Text Publishing.  Her second book; ‘Childless: a story of freedom and longing’ was short-listed for The Age Book of the Year 2022. She teaches creative writing at RMIT University, runs her own online writing courses, and mentors individual writers.

Sian is also an event host, a public speaker and a musician.  She was the founding director of the Victorian Trade Union Choir, and she is a graduate of the Opera Studio at the Victorian College of the Arts. She currently sings with the French choir La La La Chorale, the Cantabile Chamber Choir and the Westgarth Ensemble. To enquire about booking Westgarth Ensemble for a performance please email

Sian has a BA (Hons), a Graduate Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing, a Doctorate in Creative Writing, a Graduate Diploma of Opera, and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
